TLFG: 11-17 August 2025

Greetings one and all and welcome to this week's TLFG.

After all the rehearsals, pre-season for all men's teams in the top 10 tiers is now over.

The EFL, National League and all our other local non-league competitions are in full swing and this weekend, the Premier League starts too.

There are only two games in the capital at this level with Tottenham beginning the Thomas Frank era with a home game against Burnley on Saturday whilst there's a derby between Chelsea and Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Thanks to work, I've had a quiet week. I did my job interview on Thursday - it went well enough but there's only one spot and I'm up against numerous candidates including someone who's doing the job well already. My chances look negligible!

I've found my recent career to be rather unfulfilling and have used things like this blog, Non-League Day (NLD) and my voluntary roles at Actonians to keep me going.

The next round of the FA Cup takes place this weekend

The week ahead looks quite a bit more interesting.

At short notice, my wife received an invitation to take the kids to see a friend in Belgium for a few days so I'm home alone until Sunday.

Aside from work, my main goal this week is to launch a new Actonians podcast.

I've got all the kit and will head to their in-house training match on Tuesday to interview a few club personalities and hopefully some players and coaching staff ahead of their season opener at Norwich City on Sunday.

As regular readers may remember, I attempted a TLFG podcast a couple of years ago and it was easy to produce but sadly the app I used got bought by Spotify and made far less useful.

The next couple of days will be spent experimenting with free editing software and we'll see where it goes.

Talking of Actonians' match at Norwich, I'll be travelling to it on the team bus for the first time following an invitation from the coaching team.

The last time I did this sort of thing was as a teenager in the 1990s when I used to go to Harrow Borough away games with the team.

One of the benefits of supporting a smaller club is access and that's definitely the case at Actonians where every supporter also contributes in a volunteering capacity of some kind too.

In my short time with the club, I've done meet and greet, programme production, photos and videos and now hopefully a podcast too.

Norwich women's team were pretty mediocre until about two years ago when they started to receive a lot more investment.

They were runners-up last season and have way more resources and supporters than the A's but we did beat them 2-1 at The Nest in what was my highlight of the campaign.

Our squad is noticeably different now and a trio of key players are unavailable this weekend so I'll be delighted with a draw.

THE WEEK AHEAD

The opening round of games in the Premier League dominates proceedings this week but decent crowds should also be expected at fixtures throughout the EFL.

At non-league level there's a full selection of games in the National League, plus the next round of the FA Cup to enjoy too.

In women's football, it's also the opening day in tiers three to six.

As always, please make sure you check with clubs before you travel just in case a game has been called off or the venue or kick-off time has changed - this is highly possible for some of the lower non-league clubs and development matches. Also, please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

Details on all of this week's games can be found on the following match maps. If you've never used them before, please note that when there is more than one match at a specific ground you'll only be able to see individual match pins if you zoom right in. If you don't, the pins obscure each other and you might miss them. To avoid this, you can also scroll down the list of games on the drop down menu at the top of the map page to make sure you get all the information. Games are listed from top to bottom in date order so Monday's games (yellow pin) will appear first and Sunday's (orange pin) last. Games are also ranked in terms of status so the higher the division, the higher up the list they will appear on each day.
Also if you're unfamiliar with the English league structure I indicate the level at which an individual league sits in the national 'pyramid' with the Premier League at the top (Level 1) and various minor leagues at the bottom (Level 10). Typically a top level game will see crowds of anywhere between 20,000-60,000. These figures will gradually decline as you go down the leagues until you get to Levels 8-10 where attendances of 150 or less are most common.

It should also be noted that the top four levels are for fully professional teams. Level 5 has a mixture of professional and semi-professional teams, while Levels 6-10 will see most players paid but it will vary from no more than travel expenses at the bottom, right up to several hundred pounds a week at the top.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 11 August

Isthmian League Premier Division
Carshalton Athletic v Lewes @745pm - the Robins finished two places below the play-offs last season and will fancy their chances of challenging again. They got off to a fine start on Saturday, winning 2-0 at Cray Valley PM who managed a top-four finish in 2024/25. Next up they face the Rooks from Sussex. They spent seven years moving between the top two divisions of non-league in the early part of this century but have been in the seventh and eighth tiers since 2011. They are a well supported club for the level but had their worst season for sometime last year, finishing 13th. Their campaign began with a disappointing 2-0 reverse at home to Hashtag United. Tickets

Isthmian League North
Redbridge v Grays Athletic @745pm - the Motormen got stuffed 5-1 at Maldon & Tiptree on opening day, which must have been thoroughly disheartening for all involved. Grays ended last season in ninth and beat newly promoted Takeley 3-0 in their first match on Saturday. Tickets are £10 on the gate

ECL Division 1 South
Barkingside v Stansted @745pm - the 'Side have got off to a very promising start. Unbeaten in three, they're fifth coming into this one. With four points from four games, the Airportmen haven't made quite such an impressive start. Tickets for their last game were £5 on the gate but check the club's social media on the day as they often run admission promotions

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 12 August

EFL Cup First Round
Charlton Athletic v Stevenage @745pm - with its highly unusual Preliminary Round out of the way, the EFL Cup gets fully underway this week. The Addicks began life back in the Championship with a last gasp 1-0 win over Watford on Saturday. In the division below, Stevenage also won 1-0 against Rotherham to get their season off to a positive start. According to Wikipedia, the Hertfordshire club's all time record defeat came against Charlton as recently as 2018 when they lost 8-0 so they'll be hoping for a lot better performance than that. Tickets
Watford v Norwich City @745pm - no Premier League sides enter the draw this early so the best you can see are Championship clubs and two of them meet here. With the Hornets losing to Charlton, the Canaries came unstuck at home to Millwall as they both endured miserable afternoons. This competition has generated a lot of happy memories for Norwich fans as they've won it twice but the last time was back in 1985 so there won't be many under 50 who'll remember it. Tickets
Leyton Orient v Wycombe Wanderers @745pm - both these sides made the League One play-offs last season but both fell short. Two games into their league campaigns, neither are pulling up any trees yet. The O's did get their first win on Saturday though so, with home advantage, you'd expect them to progress here. Tickets
Bromley v Ipswich Town @745pm - arguably the tie of the night is this David v Goliath contest at Hayes Lane. The Ravens only made it into League Two for the first time last season to play in this cup for the first time too. They lost in the First Round to AFC Wimbledon and they'll do incredibly well to win against the Tractor Boys who've just come down from the Premier League. Tickets

National League Cup
Sutton United v Fulham U21 @7pm - this much maligned cup competition returns for a second season. Featuring fifth-tier clubs and development sides from Premier League and Championship clubs, interest from fans has been minimal. There are three group stage matches in London on Tuesday, with this derby being the pick of the games in my opinion. Tickets

Professional Development League
QPR v Coventry City @2pm - if you want to see two games in a day then we've got an U21 match at lunchtime. The R's were supposed to be playing this at Loftus Road but it's been shifted to the club's training ground in Heston, near Heathrow. Fans can attend but you have to pre-register online in advance

Isthmian League Premier
Dartford v Billericay Town @745pm - there are lots of games in the seventh tier on Tuesday and I've gone for this one as it features the sides who finished third and second last season. Alongside eventual champions Horsham, three clubs went into the final day of the 2024/25 campaign with a chance of winning the league such was the competitiveness of the division. Sadly for the Darts and Billericay, it was Dover who prevailed in the play-offs. The hosts began with a shocking 4-0 loss at Dulwich Hamlet whilst the visitors beat Wingate & Finchley 2-1. Both sides are well supported so there should be a good turnout. Tickets

Isthmian League South Central
Hendon v Bedfont Sports @745pm - with many games in the eighth tier too, it's been really hard to single out here. In the end I've gone for this one at Silver Jubilee Park. Last season two divisions separated these clubs but following the Greens' first relegation in decades and Bedfont's promotion, they're now in the same one. Hendon's bad form continued with a sorry 3-0 loss at Hartley Wintney on Saturday while the visitors enjoyed a thrilling 3-2 win over Kingstonian. Tickets are £12 on the gate

SSML Premier
Haringey Borough v Sawbridgeworth Town @745pm - in the ninth tier, two of the early pacesetters meet at Coles Park. Haringey are back at this level for the first time in 10 years following their relegation from the Isthmian League. However, their landing has been good. Unbeaten in three they come into this in third but the visitors have won all three and are top. Tickets are £10 on the gate
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 13 August

Professional Development League
Brentford v Hull City @1pm - the Bees won the PDL last season and begin the defence of their title against the Tigers at Wheatsheaf Park in Staines at lunchtime, meaning you can see two games in a day.
Tickets are usually available in advance through the club's website but I can't see anything on there yet, check with the club by calling 0333 005 8521 for the latest

Southern League Division 1 Central
London Lions v Rayners Lane @745pm - the hosts are London's highest ranked club for Jewish players. Last season saw them promoted to the eighth tier for the first time in the club's history. After losing in the FA Cup last week and their opening league game at Flackwell Heath, this will be their first home game at this level. Rayners Lane played in the parallel Isthmian League South Central last season and retained the Middlesex Senior Cup. A lot has changed off the field for the visitors and they have a new manager in post so it will be really interesting to see how they fare this year. It's hard to get information about games at Rowley Lane but expect to pay anywhere between £8-12 to get in

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 15 August

Premier League 2
Arsenal v Fulham @7pm - after a quiet Thursday, there's a good selection of games on Friday. First up is this U21 fixture at Boreham Wood's ground. This is the first game of the season for both these sides who both made the quarter-finals of the PL2 in 2024/25. The format of this competition is a little unusual. It begins with a 26-team league phase where each team only plays 20 games. The top 16 then make the play-offs. Fulham finished second in the league phase last season and beat Arsenal 6-3 in the process. Entry to these games is usually free but check with the club on the day - it certainly shouldn't exceed £5

Isthmian League Premier
Aveley v Burgess Hill Town @745pm - the Millers have made a reasonable start to life in the seventh tier following relegation from the NLS, taking four points from their first two. The visitors, on the other hand, have won both games since promotion - one of only three teams to do so. Tickets are a rather steep £14 on the gate

FA Cup Preliminary Round
Epsom & Ewell v South Park (Reigate) @745pm - the next round of the nation's favourite cup competition begins on Friday night. The Salts play a level below South Park so should start as underdogs but they have won all of their games so far and could cause an upset. The club play at Cobham's ground and tickets are £10 on the gate

ECL Division 1 South
Lymore Gardens v NW London @745pm - there's a good selection of 10th tier games on Friday but I recommend taking a look at the hosts here. Fresh out of the 11th tier Essex Alliance League, they've won all four of their opening fixtures, scoring a whopping 15 goals in the process. NWL are down in midtable and will have to be at their best to get anything. This is being played at Redbridge FC and tickets are £6 on the gate
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 16 August

Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur v Burnley @3pm - the Premier League returns this weekend which means everyone in all the major men's leagues is now up and running - the season has truly begun. There's only one top-flight game in London and it's a first domestic game for new Spurs boss Thomas Frank. Following their disappointing penalty loss to PSG in the UEFA Super Cup, they'll want to raise spirits with a commanding performance here. The Clarets are back in the top flight following their promotion and despite spending over £100m on new players, I'm sure they'll be content with a point. Premium seats are available from £149

Championship
Millwall v Middlesbrough @3pm - with two wins from two, the Lions have made a very satisfactory start to the season, both were away too. The same can't be said for Boro who got thumped 4-0 at home by Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Cup in midweek. I'm not an expert but I presume they played their kids. The Bermondsey club have only lost one of their last five at The Den against this club and I think they'll extend that run. Tickets
Watford v QPR @3pm - the biggest game of the day for which there are still a few regular tickets available is this derby. These two play 15 miles apart on the western half of TLFG's catchment area. Two very similar sized clubs who've both finished as top division runners-up in the past, these fixtures always generate a lot of interest. The R's have historically had the better of things and have only lost two of the last 10 games against their rivals and actually sealed the Championship title on this ground in 2011. The away allocation has sold out but there is some space in the home stands. Tickets

League One
Leyton Orient v Stockport County @3pm - after losing in the play-off final and seeing their star striker depart, the O's will firstly need to regroup. After defeat on the opening day, the recovered to beat Wigan but then got knocked out of the EFL Cup by Wycombe. This match isn't going to be any easier. County also made the play-offs last season and have won all three of their games so far. Tickets

League Two
Barnet v Walsall @3pm - after being crowned National League champions last season, the Bees' transition to life in the fourth tier hasn't begun smoothly. With three defeats from three games in all competitions, they're already bottom. With only one win from three, the Saddlers haven't had a great start either but they did make the play-offs last season and are more than capable of winning here. Tickets
Bromley v Fleetwood Town @3pm - the Ravens created one of the stories of the week by knocking Championship club Ipswich Town out of the EFL Cup on penalties. An unbeaten start to the league, mean they also come into this match in the play-off places. However, their Lancashire opponents are level on points with top club Crewe and won on their last trip to London two weeks ago. Tickets

National League
Wealdstone v FC Halifax Town @3pm - my game of the day in the fifth tier is this one at Grosvenor Vale. The Stones avoided relegation on the final day and appointed former player Sam Cox as manager over the summer. They started with a solid 2-0 win over Truro City and then beat Wolves in the National League Cup. Yorkshire club Halifax made the play-offs last season and have won the FA Trophy twice in recent years. However, they lost 3-0 at Braintree on the opening day. The ground is small and compact and there's usually always a decent atmosphere. Tickets

National League South
Enfield Town v Maidenhead United @3pm - in the sixth tier, the Towners were another side to leave it late to avoid the drop but they succeeded. Today they face a club who weren't so successful and lost their place in the fifth tier after eight seasons. The Magpies are a club based just to the west of London and for fans of TV show Family Guy, they have a chairman called Peter Griffin. I have met him and he's a lovely man. Tickets

Southern League Premier South
Chertsey Town v Farnham Town @3pm - the big game of the day in tier seven is this Surrey derby at Alwyns Lane. The battle to avoid relegation from this division was incredibly tight last season and the Curfews stayed up by just one point. Farnham, on the other hand, absolutely steamrollered their way to the title a level below. Over the last few years, a successful young businessman has ploughed a lot of money into this club and they'll be going for their third consecutive promotion this season. A big crowd is expected. Tickets

FA Cup Preliminary Round
For many fans of non-league football, the ties in this competition will provide the main highlights of the day. The draw is still regionalised at this stage so clubs in our area will be broadly restricted to opponents in the south-east. The winners of each tie receive £1,444 and the losers £481. How these amounts are decided, I'm not quite sure! There are ties all over London but here are my pick:

Edgware & Kingsbury v Whitstable Town @3pm - the hosts are the closest club to Wembley Stadium who are hosting a tie in this round - you can see the arch from Silver Jubilee Park. They play in the ninth tier, struggled last season and are struggling again. Their task here is very tough. Whitstable know all about Wembley - they went there in May and won the FA Vase. Tickets are £8 on the gate
SOUL Tower Hamlets v Hanworth Villa @3pm - STH won promotion to the ninth tier last season, meaning this is the first time they've entered the FA Cup since adding the SOUL prefix to their name. Unbeaten in their three league fixtures, they come into this match in good form. Hanworth play a level above them and have made the play-offs in two of the last three seasons. On paper they are strong favourites but in the FA Cup you just never know. Tickets are £9 on the gate
Tooting & Mitcham United v AFC Croydon Athletic @3pm - lastly I'm going for this south London derby at Imperial Fields. The ninth tier Terrors have a rich FA Cup history with an appearance in the Fourth Round in 1976 and numerous other appearances in the competition 'proper'. These days they find themselves in the ninth tier and they're the definite underdogs against the Rams who play a level above them and are unbeaten coming into this. Tickets are £8 on the gate
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 17 August

Premier League
Chelsea v Crystal Palace @2pm - these two had cracking 'off-seasons' if you can call it that. The Blues won the inaugural Club World Cup in the USA and Crystal Palace beat Liverpool to win the FA Community Shield for the first time. Enzo Maresca's side seem to be on a steady upward trend and are now back in the Champions League after a couple of years away. With over £200m spent on new signings, they'll be expecting further progress and a trophy of some sort. The Eagles are enjoying the most successful time in their history, winning the FA Cup and Community Shield in the space of a few months. Despite all this, the summer has been unsettled. Losing their place in the Europa League on a technicality stung and transfer rumours are swirling around some of their biggest stars. Given they beat Liverpool last week, they've got a chance here but getting anything will still be very tough. Hospitality packages are available from £395

FAWNL Southern Premier
AFC Wimbledon v Real Bedford @2pm - the women's third and fourth tiers get underway today and this match in the former tops the bill. The Dons are a solid midtable side at this level so it will be really interesting to see how this game pans out. Backed by crypto millionaires, Real Bedford's men's and women's teams have both been making inexorable progress up the divisions over the last couple of seasons. The jump from the top of the fourth tier to competing for the title in this division is big so this fixture should give us some idea of what they're capable of. This match is being played at Tooting & Mitcham United and tickets are available

FAWNL Division 1 South East
Fulham v Cambridge United @2pm - in the division below, the Cottagers are said to be among the favourites for the title. Having just been promoted to this level, there are reports of a big budget increase and a huge amount of ambition to go straight to Tier 3 in one go. Cambridge are a funny side. Capable of competing with anyone on their day, they always seem to finish in the bottom half. The men's team got relegated last season which rarely augurs well for the women's set-up but with a new manager in place and several eye-catching signings, they could be quite a handful. This is being played at Fulham's Motspur Park training facility. Tickets

TLFG: 4-10 August 2025

Greetings one and all and welcome to the latest edition of TLFG.

In less than two weeks, the season will have well and truly begun for all the men's leagues routinely covered in this blog but this week is still a bit of mishmash of friendlies and competitive games.

I headed a little out of London on its west side on Sunday to watch Actonians play Ascot United in a friendly.

The Isthmian League club have a lovely modern little ground with great facilities and tea bar right on the edge of the famous racecourse for which the Berkshire town is most famous for.

Arsenal entertain Athletic Club on Saturday

With one or two trialists and new signings on show for both clubs, a lot of experimentation was implemented by bosses of both fourth-tier clubs.

Unsurprisingly, a tight contest finished 0-0 with the two goalkeepers being the main winners as both pulled off fine saves over the 90 minutes.

The A's had the best chance to secure victory but after winning a late penalty, new signing Claudia Cholakian saw her low effort turned away.

Without doubt, the best thing about the afternoon was a first proper effort by the small group of Actonians fans to actually try and go to an away game together.

It made things, particularly the journey, much more fun and hopefully we'll be able to get more people to join us as the season goes along.

A new groundshare is about to begin with North Greenford United and some of their fans have already expressed an interest.

QPR begin their 2025/26 campaign on Saturday against Preston and Athletic Bilbao are also in town too, playing Arsenal in a friendly.

Sadly I'm working from Tuesday to Monday so it looks like being a fallow week for me - I also have a big job interview on Thursday. I've been turned down for it twice before, so here's hoping it's third time lucky.

Have a great week everyone.

THE WEEK AHEAD

The FA Community Shield dominates proceedings this week but big crowds should also be expected at a number of high-profile friendlies featuring Premier League sides.

In the EFL, the Championship gets underway and the National League, Isthmian League and Southern League start too.

There are a few FA Cup replays, plenty of other non-league matches and women's friendlies too.

As always, please make sure you check with clubs before you travel just in case a game has been called off or the venue or kick-off time has changed - this is highly possible for some of the lower non-league clubs. Also, please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 4 August

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Replays
Phoenix Sports v Leatherhead @745pm - following their relegation from the Isthmian League, Phoenix did well to travel to a club still playing at that level and earn a replay. They will, however, be disappointed with throwing away a two-goal lead. Back on home soil, they should fancy their chances of pulling off an early season cupset. One other point to note, Leatherhead have former Arsenal player Ian Selley as manager. Tickets
Sutton Common Rovers v Guildford City @745pm - in the other tie of the night, two clubs from the ninth tier CCL Premier South do battle at Carshalton Athletic's ground. The two Surrey clubs fought out a 1-1 draw on Saturday and it should be close again. Tickets will be available on the gate

SCEFL Division 1
SC Thamesmead v Bridon Ropes @745pm - in the other game of the night, these two clubs play the first game of their seasons in this 10th-tier division. The hosts finished in the bottom six last season and will hope for much better this time. The Ropes ended up nine points adrift of the play-offs and would appear to be marginal favourites here

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 5 August

Friendly
Enfield Town v Tottenham Hotspur U21 @745pm - after beating a young Arsenal side 2-0 on Saturday, the Towners conclude their pre-season preparations with a game against Spurs whose training ground is just over a mile north of the QEII Stadium. The real action begins on Saturday when Enfield make the long trip to Devon to play former EFL side Torquay United who are one of the strongest sides in the NLS. Tickets

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Replays
Ashford Town (Middlesex) v Eastbourne Town @745pm - the ninth tier Tangerines headed to the Sussex coast on Saturday and came back with creditable 2-2 draw against a side from the level above them. This will be the seventh time in their history that they've played in the Extra Preliminary Round and they've won all of the previous six so they'll hope to extend that run with home advantage
Bedfont Sports v Guernsey @745pm - in this match-up it's the hosts who play at the higher level but getting a 1-1 draw in the Channel Islands over the weekend was still a decent enough result. The visitors haven't played in the FA Cup since 2016 and they'll do well to win here
Frenford v Witham Town @745pm - Ilford club Frenford have made a disappointing start to their Essex Senior League campaign so a draw at a team who play at a higher level on Saturday was encouraging. This is only the third time they've entered the FA Cup and they've yet to win a tie
Harefield United v Peacehaven & Telscombe @745pm - the Hare caused one of the upsets of the early rounds last year by beating Lewes. They found themselves in Sussex again on Saturday and came back with a 2-2 draw after becoming another one of our local sides to surrender a two-goal lead. P&T came close to making the play-offs in their ninth-tier division last season so another close game could well ensue
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 6 August

Friendly
Arsenal v Villarreal @6pm - as pre-season approaches its end, the Premier League sides start to get involved and the most high-profile friendlies take place. The Gunners face two La Liga opponents this week, playing the first of them on Wednesday. The Yellow Submarine came fifth last season and qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2016-17 when they failed to get beyond the play-off round. On Saturday, the Spanish club drew 1-1 with Leeds at Elland Road. Getting into Premier League matches at the Emirates Stadium as a non-member is tough and expensive but there does appear to still be availability for this. Tickets

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Replays
Southall v Little Common @745pm - Saturday's draw in Sussex means the 'All get to play the first competitive match at their new home a little earlier than expected. Now groundsharing with Hayes & Yeading United after a spell at Burnham, they're pretty much back in the area they're named after which hasn't happened for a while. Little Common play a level below so they should be beaten
Holmesdale v Tunbridge Wells @745pm - the hosts play just down the road from League Two club Bromley who must cast a considerable shadow over them. The current club came into existence in the 1950s and their record in this competition is poor - they've lost in this round on the previous six occasions. The visitors play in the same ninth-tier division and are probably most famous in recent years for making the FA Vase Final at Wembley in 2013
Sporting Bengal United v Erith Town @745pm - SBU suffered relegation from the Isthmian League last year after only one season and find themselves in the Essex Senior League for this campaign. A draw against the Dockers, who remain at that level, was promising but they'll do well to get past them here. This is being played at Mile End Stadium

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 8 August

Friendlies
Brentford v Borussia Monchengladbach @730pm - the Bees end their pre-season schedule with this eye-catching friendly against German opposition. The Foals finished 10th in the Bundesliga last season so should be at more or less the same level as Brentford. Shorn of hugely successful manager Thomas Frank and a number of their best players, the west London club have a critical season ahead of them. Many have already declared they won't survive. Tickets
Chelsea v Bayer Leverkusen @7pm - a little earlier on the same side of town, the Blues prepare to play their first game since winning the Club World Cup in July. Bayer sensationally won the Bundesliga in 2023/24 and they finished second last year. However, with boss Xabi Alonso having left for Real Madrid, they are now managed by Erik ten Hag who will be wanting to strengthen his reputation after a challenging spell at Manchester United. Tickets

Isthmian League Premier Division
Aveley v Brentwood Town @745pm - the Isthmian League season gets underway with this Essex derby. The Millers are just down from the National League South after a two-season stint and the Blues are back at this level for the first time in nine years after promotion. Parkside is one of the most modern non-league grounds in the south-east and it should play host to a sizeable crowd

SCEFL Premier Division
Chislehurst Glebe v Phoenix Sports @745pm - there's also a derby in this ninth-tier division. Both playing in south-east London, hopefully there'll be a reasonable attendance for this too. Phoenix are back in this league after relegation and are still to win any of their opening games, although that could change if they win their cup tie earlier in the week

ECL Division 1 South
Barkingside v Cannons Wood @745pm - there are three good options in this division on Friday but I've gone for this as both sides play in east London and both are in the top six. The hosts narrowly avoided finishing in the relegation zone last season so it's great to see them get off to a positive start
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 9 August

Friendlies
Arsenal v Athletic Bilbao @5pm - the Gunners complete their La Liga double by hosting Basque giants Athletic Club. Last season they finished fourth and made it to the semi-finals of the Europa League. They also managed to tie star player Nico Williams to a 10-year-contract in recent weeks so things are looking positive for Ernesto Valverde's side. Tickets
Fulham v Eintracht Frankfurt @5pm - the Cottagers welcome the side who finished third in Germany last season so they could be in for a challenging afternoon. The Craven Cottage club have only played two other games this summer, against Nottingham Forest and Saudi club Al-Ittihad, but won them both. Tickets
West Ham United v Lille @3pm - earlier in the afternoon, the Hammers take on the side who came fifth in France. The east London club played some pretty turgid stuff last season but stayed up comfortably as the bottom three were so far off the pace and Man Utd and Spurs were uncharacteristically awful. Tickets are usually available to non-members for all of West Ham's games but for some reason this has sold out - the low prices (£10) may have been a factor

Championship
Charlton Athletic v Watford @1230pm - the second tier gets underway this weekend and with both of these clubs located within the M25, we have a derby of sorts. The Addicks are back at this level for the first time in five years after winning the League One play-offs and they'll be hoping to make a positive start. The Hornets started really strongly last season but faded badly and only won one of their last nine games to end up in midtable. It cost boss Tom Cleverley his job and he's been replaced by Uruguayan Paulo Pezzolano. Demand for tickets is high and you must have a previous purchasing history to get one
Queens Park Rangers v Preston North End @3pm - two of the longest-named clubs in the EFL meet at Loftus Road in their season opener. The R's had a rollercoaster of a season under Marti Cifuentes but his tenure came to an end when he was put on gardening leave shortly before the end of the campaign, with a full dismissal following over the summer (he's now in charge at Leicester City). PNE finished in the bottom five and lost at home to QPR in the final weeks of the season. In fact, Rangers have won four in a row against the Lancashire club so the omens look good for them. Tickets

League One
AFC Wimbledon v Lincoln City @3pm - the Dons began life back in the third tier by losing 1-0 at Luton on Friday. By all accounts, the defence looked solid enough but there wasn't much going on at the other end. The Imps started their campaign with a tidy 2-0 win over Reading but they're seen as only 10/1 by the bookies to be promoted. Tickets
Leyton Orient v Wigan Athletic @3pm - following the disappointment of losing to Charlton in the play-off final last season, they also saw top scorer Charlie Kelman (who was on loan from QPR) move to the Addicks. Their campaign began with a resounding 3-0 loss to Huddersfield and Wigan started with a win too, meaning this could be another tough one. Tickets

League Two
Bromley v Barnet @3pm - the only two London clubs in the division meet early on. The Ravens played their first ever season in the EFL last year and managed a comfortable midtable finish. Next up they face the Bees who are back in the fourth tier after winning the National League. The north London club suffered a 2-0 loss to Fleetwood in their opening game whilst Bromley managed a 0-0 draw at Shrewsbury. Tickets

National League
Boreham Wood v Rochdale @3pm - the Wood find themselves back in the fifth tier after making an immediate return from the NLS via the play-offs. The Hertfordshire outfit remain one of the smallest clubs at this level so staying up must surely be their first priority. They've landed a tough opening game with one of the bigger sides in the division travelling down from Greater Manchester. They've only played twice before, in the 2023/24 season, and both games ended in a draw. Tickets
Wealdstone v Truro City @3pm - the Stones managed to dramatically avoid relegation on the final day last season but boss Neil Gibson, who was based in Wales, decided to call it a day. Former player Sam Cox, who was interim manager for a short spell the previous season, has replaced him. Pre-season has seen a mixed bag of results, with the 2-0 win over MK Dons probably being the pick of the results. Truro won promotion last season to become the first Cornish club in history to play in the fifth tier. They face some mammoth journeys in the National League but they should bring a large away following for this big game in the club's history. Tickets

National League South
Dagenham & Redbridge v Ebbsfleet United @3pm - this would appear to be the pick of the games in the sixth tier. Both sides were relegated from the National League last season and they don't play a million miles apart either, meaning we should get a good crowd too. Tickets

Isthmian League Premier Division
Dulwich Hamlet v Dartford @3pm - the biggest crowd of the day in the seventh tier will almost certainly be found at Champion Hill. Both sides suffered their own disappointments last season with the Hamlet finishing just above the relegation zone and the Darts losing in the play-offs. Both sides have large fanbases and both played in the NLS until recently so both should be aspiring to win promotion this season. Tickets often sell out so you are strongly advised to buy in advance

Southern League Premier South
Uxbridge v Dorchester Town @3pm - it's an historic day at Honeycroft where the Reds will play in the seventh tier for the first time in their long history. Founded in 1871, the Middlesex club moved up to this division after winning the Isthmian League South Central play-offs last season. They begin with a very tough fixture against the Magpies who made the play-offs in 2024/25 and are expected to do well again. Tickets

Isthmian League South Central
Egham Town v Harrow Borough @745pm - with it being the first day of the league season in the eighth tier it's quite hard to pick a game objectively so I'm going to be totally subjective and pick this one. It features my favourite non-league side Harrow and their trip to Egham. The Sarnies won promotion to this division under the management of former Boro boss Jordan Berry. His time at Earlsmead was not a happy one and he was in the hotseat when they suffered their first relegation for decades in 2023/24. Many of the players involved in that team are also with Egham today so it could get quite spicy. Harrow are under new management and Wayne Carter's reign began with a thumping 4-0 win at Stansfeld in the FA Cup on Sunday

Essex Senior League
Woodford Town v Sporting Bengal United @3pm - the hosts have shot out of the blocks with two wins in the league and another in the FA Cup. After finishing in the top three for the last three seasons and always coming unstuck in the play-offs, they'll be really hoping it's their year. Two seasons ago, SBU were the team to defeat them in the post-season but their time in the Isthmian League was short and they came straight back down. You could say, Woodford have a score to settle and they look to be in the form to do it

CCL Division 1
Brook House v Berks County @3pm - based in Hayes in west London, the Brook have looked really sharp this summer. Impressive in pre-season, they've won the opening three games of the new campaign to go second on goal difference. The visitors are back in this division after a disappointing one-year stint in the CCL Premier North. Currently eighth, they've made a reasonable start
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 10 August

FA Community Shield
Crystal Palace v Liverpool @3pm - the annual pre-season curtain-raiser between the winners of the FA Cup and Premier League at Wembley is here again. With the FA Cup being the Eagles' first ever major trophy win, they haven't played in this before and will definitely be underdogs against a Reds side who've won it 16 times. Tickets are only available to members

Men's Friendly
Chelsea v AC Milan @3pm - if you can't get a ticket for the match above then there are a few left for this one at Stamford Bridge. On paper, this might actually appear to be a more attractive proposition to the neutral. Milan aren't quite the side they used to be and only finished eighth in Serie A last season but they always draw a crowd. How strong a side they field is questionable as they're playing Leeds in Dublin the day before. Tickets

Women's friendly
AFC Wimbledon v QPR @2pm - the majority of games on Sunday are women's pre-season matches with this one being the pick of what's on offer. The Dons play in the third tier and they host QPR from the division below. This is being played at Tooting & Mitcham United

TLFG: 28 July - 3 August 2025

Wow - did that just happen?

Yes it really did!

England won a major tournament, for the second time in a row, on penalties and away from home!

I've heard the Lionesses' performances described as 'proper English' throughout this tournament and I can't quite understand why as England for most of my lifetime have never won anything, certainly not on penalties and never on foreign soil.

Anyway, who cares? We won and it feels great.

As regular readers know, I've become a devotee of the women's game since the last Euros and it's completely changed my football life.

QPR entertain Brentford on Saturday

The months ahead look exciting for England and the WSL.

I'm hopeful of a good year for Actonians too - they've made some decent signings this summer and picked up a big one on Friday but that's all I'll say on that for now.

One of the worst things about the last few weeks has been the amount of people, usually men, queuing up to criticise and belittle Sarina Wiegman's team despite their ongoing success.

It's sad that they can't celebrate or feel the joy many of us are experiencing right now but that's their loss.

Anyway, aside from enjoying the Women's Euros, I haven't actually done much else this week as work has taken precedence.

I'm off this weekend so I'll hopefully get to a game then.

THE WEEK AHEAD

This week sees League Two get underway as well as the opening round of the FA Cup and even a preliminary round in the EFL Cup . We've also got plenty of friendlies featuring Premier League, Championship and one or two foreign teams plus loads of non-league ones as well.

As always, please make sure you check with clubs before you travel just in case a game has been called off or the venue or kick-off time has changed - this is highly possible for some of the lower non-league clubs. Also, please let me know if anything is wrong or missing.

Monday 28 July

CCL Division 1
RB Kensington v Chalfont St Peter @745pm - RBK should've gone down last season but received a reprieve to remain in this 10th-tier division. Playing at North Greenford United in 2024/25, they've switched to share with Northwood this season - even further away from their inner city roots. On Saturday they played their part in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Spelthorne Sports. CSP also drew 2-2 in their opening game with Colliers Wood and it could well be close again here

ECL Division 1 South
Lymore Gardens v Brimsdown @745pm - the hosts, who groundshare at Redbridge, are playing in the 10th tier for the first time in their history after stepping up from the Essex Alliance League. They played their opening game on Friday and smashed Hoddesdon Town 5-1 to go straight to the top of the division. Next up they play Brimsdown who finished in the lower half last season and lost game one

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 29 July

EFL Cup Preliminary Round
Barnet v Newport County @745pm - with a whopping nine English teams qualifying for European competitions this season, delaying their entry into this cup, a rare Preliminary Round is required. The Bees and their Welsh opponents were two of the four teams who failed to get a bye to the First Round, meaning they'll have to get their seasons underway earlier than everyone else in League Two. The Bees topped the National League last season so they'll hope to carry that winning momentum into this tie. Tickets

Friendlies
Sutton United v Millwall @745pm - for many teams, it's still pre-season and the U's continue their build up to another year in the fifth tier with this challenging fixture against Championship opposition. The Lions have looked reasonable in pre-season and have beaten three EFL sides over the last couple of weeks. However, Sutton have won all four of their warm-up games with the highlights being wins over League One sides AFC Wimbledon and Wycombe Wanderers. Tickets
Wealdstone v QPR U21 @730pm - the fifth tier Stones began their pre-season programme with two solid wins over Northwood and MK Dons but have since lost twice to Charlton Athletic and St Albans City. The R's youngsters suffered their first defeat of the summer of Tuesday when they lost 3-2 at local non-league club Hanwell Town and this is another game with a derby feel. Tickets
Enfield Town v Arsenal U21 @745pm - the Towners had a rough time in the sixth tier last season but managed to stay up. Pre-season began in underwhelming fashion too as they suffered four straight defeats. However, back-to-back wins over Braintree Town and Wingate & Finchley should have raised spirits. They'll be hoping to boost their finances too as their final two friendlies are against young sides from Arsenal and Spurs. First up are the Gunners who have yet to win in July. Tickets
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday 30 July

Friendlies
Watford v Deportivo La Coruna @745pm - unbeaten in their three games so far this summer, the Hornets complete their pre-season programme against Spanish opposition. The Galician club won the La Liga title 25 years ago but they've had a terrible time since, dropping into the third tier in 2020. Now back in the second division, they had an almost identical campaign to Watford last year so this could be a pretty even game. Tickets

Essex Senior League
Buckhurst Hill v SOUL Tower Hamlets @745pm - a look at the early league table makes tonight's fixtures look like Super Tuesday as all of the top four are playing each other. The hosts finished ninth last season but were well adrift of the play-off pace. They started with a morale boosting 3-1 win over Ilford on Saturday. STH won promotion last season and took their great form into their opener, triumphing 5-2 at White Ensign, meaning they should be hopeful of getting something here
Romford v Saffron Walden Town @745pm - in the other match of the evening, it's third versus first. Both sides scored four in impressive first run-outs over the weekend and it will be interesting to see what happens here. SWT finished sixth last season and look like strong to contenders to at least make the play-offs this time

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday 31 July

Friendly
Hashtag United v Soccer Elite @730pm - the only game within the M25 that I'm aware of is this women's match at Aveley's ground on the far east side of town. I'm afraid to say there's not a lot going for it. Apparently the Tags have cut spending to their impressive women's team, most of their stars have departed and a it's set to be a struggle in the third tier this year. Soccer Elite play way down in the sixth tier and this kind of shows the ambition, or lack of, which the Essex club now have

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday 1 August

Friendly
Welling United v Millwall U21 @745pm - there's only one option on Friday too but this should be a bit more interesting. Following their relegation to the Isthmian League, the Wings have been a real mixed bag in pre-season with Saturday's 3-2 win at local rivals VCD Athletic probably being the highlight. The Lions' youngsters have lost their two games so far, so Welling will hope to end their preparations on a high. Tickets will be available on the gate
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday 2 August

Friendlies
QPR v Brentford @3pm - the most eye-catching game of the weekend would appear to be this west London derby at Loftus Road. For decades, the R's were the more senior team but now it's the Bees who are the Premier League side with the bigger names and bigger budget. Both sides are starting 2025/26 with new managers and both will have something to prove. I'm told the visitors have sold out their allocation so there should be a good atmosphere. Tickets
Millwall v GD Estoril Praia @3pm - the Lions conclude their pre-season by playing a European opponent. The Canaries finished eighth in Portugal's top flight in 2024/25 and should provide a different type of test for Alex Neil's side. Tickets

League Two
Barnet v Fleetwood Town @3pm - after the midweek cup game, the Bees properly begin their return to the fourth tier by playing the Fishermen who make the long journey down from Lancashire. Pete Wild took over at Highbury just after Christmas and guided them to a 14th-place finish. These sides haven't played since 2019 and on that occasion, Fleetwood won 2-0 at The Hive in the FA Cup. Tickets

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
There are lots of friendlies featuring the highest ranked non-league teams on Saturday but the most interesting matches at this level are those taking place in the opening round of the nation's favourite cup competition. Sides in the eighth and ninth tiers populate the draw at this early stage. The winners of each game earn £1,125 whilst the losers bank £375. Here are a few ties which catch my eye:

AFC Croydon Athletic v Roffey @3pm - it's quite hard to recommend games at this early point of the season but I'll give it a try. The Rams play a level above SCFL side Roffey so they should start as favourites. The most notable thing about these clubs is the famous names associated with them. The hosts are owned by rapper Stormzy and former Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha. Roffey, on the other hand, have Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes' brother Ricardo playing for them MATCH SWITCHED TO ROFFEY
AFC Whyteleafe v Chipstead @3pm - there's a local derby in the deep south where the newly promoted Leafe entertain the Chips. Last season, the hosts made it all the way to Wembley before losing in the FA Vase final to Whitstable. The visitors play at the same level as Whyteleafe but they've lost in the opening round of the FA Cup for the last three seasons
Haringey Borough v Halstead Town @3pm - when I started this blog in 2011, Haringey were in the ninth tier and playing in front of tiny crowds. Then in 2013 things began to change. A second-place finish in the Essex Senior League was followed by them winning the title the following year. Three seasons later they found themselves in the seventh tier, entertaining hundreds of fans in the Isthmian Premier. While there, they famously made it to the First Round of the FA Cup where they narrowly lost 1-0 to AFC Wimbledon. Sadly that was their peak season and since Covid, it's been downhill all the way. Two relegations later and they're back in the ninth tier and hoping for a much better season. Here they play a fellow ninth-tier club from Essex

SSML Division 1
Everett Rovers v Rothwell Corinthians @3pm - in the 10th tier I've gone for this match as it's the first home game for Everett at this level following their promotion. It all began incredibly well for them on Saturday when they won 3-0 at Rushden & Higham United so there must be lots of optimism at this Watford-based club going into this

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday 3 August

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Stansfeld v Harrow Borough @1pm - the hosts groundshare with Cray Valley PM in south-east London and as they're at home on Saturday, this tie is being played on Sunday. Since moving up to the ninth tier, they've found things a struggle but they've stayed up. Still yet to make any real impact on the FA Cup, they face an Isthmian League club who've made a number of appearances in the First Round and even made the Second Round on one occasion. After a midtable finish last season, Boro come into this one with new boss Wayne Carter at the helm. He took Harefield United to the Combined Counties League play-offs last term and presided over their considerable cupset of Lewes in the First Qualifying Round
Hilltop v Deal Town @3pm - having spent some time outside the M25 at Beaconsfield Town, Hilltop are back in the capital this year groundsharing at Silver Jubilee Park alongside Hendon and Edgware & Kingsbury. A look at the records shows that the hosts, who have their roots in the Somali community, have never won an FA Cup tie and it's not going to be easy against Deal. The Kent club won the FA Vase back in 2000 and play a division above so will start as favourites

Friendly
AFC Wimbledon v Southampton @2pm - the pick of the women's friendlies sees the third-tier Dons welcome Championship opposition. After beating London Bees, from the division below last week, the south London club took on Loughborough Lightning from a parallel division on Sunday but lost 2-1. The Saints should be tough. This is being played at Tooting & Mitcham United

TLFG: 21-27 July 2025

Greetings one and all and welcome to this week's TLFG.

It's a big few days for a lot of our local ninth and tenth tier non-league clubs as their seasons actually get underway - yes, you read that right, competitive football in July.

However, for the neutral, the most eye-catching fixtures will still be pre-season friendlies.

Over the last week I managed to get to one game - Actonians' first friendly of the summer at Dartford.

Famous for being the home town of the Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, I'd never been to this part of Kent before.

Actonians travelled to Dartford for a friendly

A straightforward train ride from Charing Cross, it took me a little over two hours to get from door-to-door from my home in Shepherds Bush, including a 20-minute or so walk from the station to the ground.

Princes Park is one of the finest non-league stadiums in the south-east and I'd always wanted to go so when this fixture came up, I thought it was finally my chance.

However, with this only being a women's pre-season friendly it was shunted onto the 4G pitch outside.

To be fair, it had a small stand of its own and wasn't a bad facility but it was still disappointing.

The game itself wasn't a classic with the only goal coming near the end of the first half for the hosts.

With most of last season's squad retained and a number of decent new recruits on show, the A's looked solid enough and they needed to be as it was a bruising and bad-tempered encounter.

However, there is still an obvious need for a striker, following the departure of Dior Knorr to AFC Wimbledon last season  (she's since gone to America and been called up by Ghana).

If you know anyone, let me know!

In other news, my own personal sporting achievement of the week saw me continue my A-Z of London football club runs.

Meeting up with TLFG reader Liam, we ran from Shepherds Bush to Millwall - a distance of just over 15km.

Liam and I ran to Millwall on Tuesday

My fitness hasn't been great recently but I was really pleased how this went as we cut through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, before passing Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament.

With Elephant & Castle behind us, we had less than 5km to go.

As The Den came into view, the police began pulling a 'Police Line Do Not Cross' tape right across our path, requiring a last-minute diversion - adding a really authentic touch to our visit to Millwall country!

So N is next and I think it'll be CCL Premier North side North Greenford United - it's not too far from here and Actonians will be playing home games there next season.

I think that's it from me - have a great week.

THE WEEK AHEAD

This week's highlights include friendlies featuring several EFL teams and one from the Premier League. We've also got the opening weekend of fixtures in several non-league competitions.

TLFG DAILY DIGEST
In the following section, I list what are in my opinion the most notable games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. Check the maps above for kick-off times, ticket info and directions.

Monday 21 July

Friendly
Hashtag United v Chelmsford City @745pm - to my knowledge, this match on the east side of town is the only men's game taking place within the M25. It's an all-Essex affair with the seventh-tier Tags taking on a team from the division above. This is being played at Aveley's ground

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday 22 July

Friendlies
AFC Wimbledon v Millwall @730pm - the match of the night would appear to be this London derby at Plough Lane. Newly promoted to League One, the Dons will hope to impress against Championship opposition. Tickets
Leyton Orient v Tottenham Hotspur U21 @745pm - the O's have scored 19 goals in their four pre-season games so far as they've made an impressive start to their preparations. Spurs' youngsters have yet to win in July but you'd expect this to be a bit closer than some of Orient's games so far. Tickets
Barnet v Wycombe Wanderers @745pm - at The Hive, the Bees welcome the League One Chairboys. After seeing their match against a Leyton Orient XI rained off on Saturday, this will be their first match since losing 3-1 to a Crystal Palace side last week. Tickets
Bromley v Crystal Palace U21 @745pm - those Eagles youngsters are next in action here in what is a south-east London derby. The Ravens have won three of their four pre-season games and beat a Chelsea XI 2-1 on Saturday. Tickets
Dagenham & Redbridge v Colchester United @730pm - the Daggers suffered relegation last season and have been inconsistent in pre-season. Colchester are in League Two as are Crawley who thrashed them 5-1 last week. It could be another tough night. Tickets

A bit further afield
MK Dons v Peterborough United @730pm - about 50 miles north of London, these two EFL sides meet at Stadium MK. The hosts play a level below Posh so should be underdogs on paper. Tickets
Ebbsfleet United v Gillingham @745pm - head east along the Thames and you'll come to Ebbsfleet which hosts this Kent derby. Back down in the National League South for this campaign, Ebbsfleet are two divisions below the Gills. Tickets

Wealdstone v Charlton Athletic @630pm - with wins over Northwood and MK Dons in their first two friendlies, the fifth-tier Stones head into this challenging game against Championship opposition in good nick. Note the earlier than normal kick-off time for this. Tickets
Dulwich Hamlet v Leyton Orient @745pm - in the build up to their second season in the women's fourth tier, the Hamlet welcome a hugely ambitious O's team. Although way down in the seventh tier, the east London club have recruited third tier Hashtag United's management team and captain plus a number of other players who should be way too good for the level. Many teams in the GLWFL Premier play on little more than park pitches and are entirely amateur so that division is going to be a massive non-event this season as they all get steamrollered! Tickets

Thursday 24 July

Friendly
London Bees v Maidenhead United @745pm - there are a couple of non-league men's friendlies on Thursday (which are on the map) but if it was me, I'd choose this women's game every time. Being played at Barnet's Hive complex in north London, this match between sides in parallel fourth-tier divisions should be keenly contested

Friday 25 July

Friendlies
Boreham Wood v West Ham United U21 @730pm - there are a decent selection of games on Friday night including this one at Meadow Park. Now back in the fifth tier, the Wood have failed to win any of their five pre-season games but they have managed a draw against young sides from Arsenal and Spurs. They'll be hoping to get their first breakthrough against the Hammers' youngsters. Tickets

CCL Premier South
Epsom & Ewell v Guildford City @745pm - it may well still be July but several ninth and tenth-tier leagues get underway this weekend. Being played at Cobham, both these sides will hope for better campaigns than last year as they made little headway in midtable. Tickets will be available on the gate

Essex Senior League
West Essex v Romford @745pm - groundsharing with Walthamstow at Wadham Lodge, the hosts play most of their home games on Fridays. These two had almost identical seasons last year, finishing in midtable alongside each other on 48 points. Tickets will be available on the gate

ECL Division 1 South
Cannons Wood v Brimsdown @745pm - the hosts were in play-off contention in this tenth-tier division last season but fell away towards the end. Playing at Aveley, they'd expect to start as favourites for this one. Tickets will be available on the gate
Lymore Gardens v Hoddesdon Town @745pm - after finishing as runners-up in the 11th tier Essex Alliance League, LG are stepping up to this level for what I believe is the first time in their history. They welcome a Hoddesdon side who finished eighth last season. This is being played at Redbridge. Tickets will be available on the gate

Saturday 26 July

Friendlies
QPR v Heerenveen @3pm - for my money, the top game in town is the R's encounter with De Superfriezen. The Dutch side finished ninth in the Eredivisie last season so this should be a pretty even contest. QPR have been very inconsistent in pre-season but they did beat French side Toulouse 2-1 on Friday. Tickets
Leyton Orient v Watford @3pm - although not quite as glamorous, this game is effectively a derby. The O's made it to the League One play-off final last season whilst the Hornets pottered along in Championship midtable - it's another one that's hard to call. Tickets
Bromley v Millwall @3pm - there's no doubt about the derby status of this game in south-east London. The Lions often keep their pre-season games pretty local and this match against the Ravens definitely fits that description. Preparing for their second season in League Two, the Ravens will expect a tough afternoon against their Championship opponents. Tickets
Sutton United v Crystal Palace U21 @3pm - there's another all-south London game at Gander Green Lane as the National League U's take on a side from one of their local Premier League clubs. Tickets
Dartford v Gillingham @3pm - the Darts made it to the Isthmian Premier play-offs last year but lost to remain in the seventh tier for another year. On Saturday they welcome their local League Two club for a derby. Tickets

A bit further afield
Luton Town v Tottenham Hotspur @3pm - Spurs began their pre-season with a 2-0 win at Reading last weekend and fielded pretty much all their main players at some stage. Next up they make the short journey north to play the Hatters in Bedfordshire. If you've never been to Kenilworth Road, it's unique and set to close at the end of 2027/28 season so get a visit in while you can. Tickets

Sunday 27 July

Friendlies
AFC Wimbledon v Loughborough Lightning @2pm - it's all about women's football on Sunday. This match tops the bill and will be the Dons' first at Tooting & Mitcham United's stadium since announcing their new groundshare. They finished in midtable in the third tier in 2024/25, their first at this level. The visitors won their fourth-tier division to move up to this level so it should be a decent contest
Charlton Athletic U21 v Actonians @3pm - the A's played the Addicks' youngsters a couple of years ago in pre-season and I went to the game. It was played at the EFL club's training ground which I found to be quite an impressive facility. I'm not sure if it will be open to the public yet but I would recommend visiting if it is MATCH OFF
Dulwich Hamlet v Hashtag United @2pm - after playing Leyton Orient in midweek, it will be really interesting to see how good this Hashtag side now is. Shorn of the management team and most of the players which made them third-tier title contenders last season, many expect the Tags to really struggle
London Bees v Farnham Town @2pm - the visitors are a team to keep an eye on. With the men's team moving through the divisions quickly after having fortunes lavished on them, the women's side are making notable progress too. Still down in the sixth tier, a strong Bees side from two levels above them should provide a stern test MATCH OFF
